Trust and Estate Attorney Opportunity

Wegman Hessler, a mid-sized law firm near Cleveland, Ohio is currently seeking an experienced Trust and Estate Attorney to join their Probate and Trusts team. For more than 50 years, the firm has provided strategic legal counsel to closely held businesses, business leaders, family enterprises, corporations, and individuals throughout Northeast Ohio and across the United States. This is a full-time, in-office position.

The Estates & Trusts Attorney is responsible for guiding clients through the estate planning process and effectively administering complex estate, trust, and guardianship matters. Working under the direction of Rachel Lyons and Peter Hessler, the attorney will manage an existing book of business, be assigned firm clients, and contribute to the growth of the practice through ongoing business development. Target clients include those in need of trusts and instruments designed to minimize the costs and taxation associated with the transfer of wealth to heirs and beneficiaries. The attorney will also collaborate with the firm's business attorneys on succession planning matters and support litigation generated by the practice area, including probate-related and trust disputes.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Ohio Bar required
  • 10+ years of experience directing clients through the estate planning process, including drafting estate-related documents and administering complex estate, trust, and guardianship transactions
  • An existing book of business (required)
  • Solid writing, analytical, and research skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong attention to detail and highly organized
  • Spirit of collaboration with other attorneys and willingness to mentor and support paralegal team members
  • Self-motivated, confident, and proactive -- a self-starter willing to handle a variety of legal matters

Preferred Experience

  • Working knowledge of trusts and instruments designed for wealth transfer, tax minimization, and estate preservation.
  • Experience supporting succession planning for closely held or family-owned businesses.
  • Familiarity with probate-related litigation and trust disputes.
  • Proficiency with PerfectLaw or comparable practice management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Direct clients through the estate planning process, providing authoritative legal advice for individuals and families
  • Draft and prepare correspondence, contracts, estate planning documents, and other legal instruments
  • Monitor routine to complex estate and related legal matters, formulate courses of action, and ensure deadlines are maintained
  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations to provide authoritative legal advice for individuals and families.
  • Collaborate with the firm's business attorneys on succession planning for business clients
  • Support litigation matters generated by the practice area, including probate-related and trust disputes
  • Directly and indirectly contribute to the financial success of the Firm
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients.
  • Engage in business development, amplifying firm services to prospective and new clients on an ongoing basis
  • Actively promotes professionalism, collegiality and diversity within and outside the Firm.
  • Deliver excellent client service and quick follow-up to internal and external clients.
  • Possesses strong organizational, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Represents and promotes the firm within the community and at public, social, and business gatherings.
  • Assigns and reviews the work of department staff, as required.
  • Meet billable expectations as established by practice management, inclusive of time spent on client development under the firm's client origination bonus program

Administrative Expectations

  • As much as the firm enjoys a degree of work-life flexibility, the Attorney will ensure that staff and estate and trust attorneys are aware of times away from the office, including PTO
  • The firm bills at each month end. The attorney will effectively record billable hours and post them based on the published schedule
  • Review and return pre-bills to the Administration team in a timely manner with clear directions
  • Support the administrative function as needed in ensuring timely client payments
  • Develop proficiency in the PerfectLaw system
  • Use firm-provided engagement letters
  • Respond in a timely manner to administrative requests
  • Complete internet security assignments as assigned

Associate Intellectual Property Attorney Opportunity

Wegman Hessler, a mid-sized law firm near Cleveland, Ohio is currently seeking an Associate-level Intellectual Property Attorney to join their growing IP practice. For more than 50 years, the firm has provided strategic legal counsel to closely held businesses, family enterprises, corporations, and individuals throughout Northeast Ohio and across the United States. This is a full-time, in-office position.

The Associate IP Attorney is responsible for patent preparation and prosecution across mechanical, electrical, and semiconductor software technologies. This role is ideal for an attorney who enjoys working closely with engineers, innovators, and product teams to protect new technologies and build strong patent portfolios. The attorney will also support paralegals working with client trademark needs.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school; admission to at least one U.S. state bar preferred. Experienced Patent Agents will be considered.
  • USPTO registration required.
  • 3-5 years of experience drafting and prosecuting patents — mechanical, software, or both.
  • Technical degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working with complex technical concepts and communicating them clearly.
  • Self-motivated, professional, and proactive.

Preferred Experience

  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and semiconductor patent work.
  • Experience with global patent portfolios.
  • Familiarity with IP strategy, invention harvesting, or in-house/industry collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications for mechanical devices, systems, electrical, and semiconductor technologies.
  • Conduct prior art searches, patentability analyses, and support freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments.
  • Collaborate directly with inventors, R&D teams, and product groups to identify patentable innovations.
  • Prepare responses to USPTO and foreign patent office actions.
  • Assist with portfolio management, competitive IP analysis, and invention disclosure reviews.
  • Support IP-related due diligence, licensing matters, and occasional post-grant proceedings as needed.

The Probate & Estate Planning Paralegal is responsible for providing exceptional, responsive and cost-effective support to attorneys in the probate practice group. This role encompasses all aspects of estate planning, estate administration, guardianship, and trust administration — including drafting legal documents, managing client files, coordinating with courts and related parties, and ensuring the efficient handling of probate matters from intake through completion.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in estate planning, estate administration, guardianship, and trust administration;

Responsibilities

  • Accept and process new client intakes; open, maintain, and close client files per firm procedures.
  • Perform general administrative duties such as filing, scanning, copying, faxing, etc.
  • Assist in the drafting of estate planning documents, including Wills, Trust Agreements, Powers of Attorney, Advanced Directives, and Deeds.
  • Assist in the drafting of probate documents for estate, guardianship, and trust administration, including Trust Reports and related correspondence.
  • Maintain a calendar and database of all administration and estate planning files, ensuring deadlines and key dates are tracked accurately.
  • Interact with clients, court personnel, and related parties via telephone and email, delivering a high standard of responsiveness and professionalism.

E-Discovery Litigation Paralegal Opportunity

Wegman Hessler, a mid-sized law firm near Cleveland, Ohio is currently seeking an experienced E-Discovery Litigation Paralegal to join their team. The firm is nationally recognized for its appellate and litigation work, serving the diverse needs of clients in Northeast Ohio and across the United States. This is an in-office position.

The E-Discovery Litigation Paralegal is responsible for providing support and assistance to attorneys in the coordination, management, and supervision of all aspects of litigation, including but not limited to handling large caseloads, preparing drafts of legal and other documents, as well as correspondence for attorney review; compile, analyze and summarize information and coordinate efforts between attorneys, clients outside legal counsel, opposing legal counsel, other parties and outside vendors.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited paralegal program (associate’s degree or relevant certification).
  • Minimum of 5 years Digital Paralegal experience in a law firm preferred.
  • Experience with all stages of litigation, including intake, discovery and trial in addition to preparing for and attending trials/arbitration hearings.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience with Opus 2, Westlaw, TextMap, CaseMap, iManage (or comparable DMS), Everlaw, Trial Director preferred

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review and/or analyze routine legal documents as requested by attorneys.
  • Manage large-scale discovery and e-discovery matters, including document preservation, collection and production.
  • Provide hands-on operational litigation technology support, including but not limited to projects such as database creation and maintenance; importing images into databases; searching data; exporting data; reformatting and converting data; designing forms and reports; e-discovery processes; scanning, OCR and coding use.
  • Organize and maintain case files using a variety of automated procedures.
  • Assist with preparing attorneys and witnesses for depositions and court appearances, including without limitation the assembly of case files and evidence.
  • Prepare for trials in state and federal courts, including managing trial support, creating and overseeing trial exhibits, setting up war rooms and attending trials to assist with presenting evidence as needed.
  • Review and summarize depositions.
  • Manage and assist with finalizing witness affidavits.
  • Review documents for privilege and drafts privilege logs for attorney review.
  • Perform legal and factual research.
  • Interact with outside entities (i.e., courts, government agencies, expert witnesses, corporations, vendors and other law firms) to gather information or coordinate activities as needed in support of firm activities, specifically trials and arbitrations.
  • Serve as the liaison between case team attorneys and support staff as needed to ensure that case-specific paralegal services meet the team's expectations.
  • Meet billable goals as established by practice management.
  • Work in the corporate headquarters to ensure effective and direct collaboration with the Litigation team.
